Pompallier Catholic School

On a cloudy day in Kaitaia on the 8th September 2007 the local Pompallier School took a gamble in running for the first time a trolley derby, which was open to everyone. The response was overwhelming and at times it appeared that half the town had turned up. Not only were people there to participate but they were a very enthusiastic audience.

This event took many back 50 years when trolley derby's were run on the same Redan Road hill. As remembered then half the town would turn out for a day of fun to not only look at the different trolley designs but to recognise those who were either brave or fool hardy enough to challenge the speed of the hill. Then as now when an trolley crashed everyone was very interested.

The galleries below contain over 200 photos of the derby taken by John Edmonds. These photos show the numerous trolleys with their drivers racing, views of the spectators, the stalls which were set-up to serve food and drink, and the prize giving at the end.

Anyone wanting copies of these photos can purchase them from here.......
